It is a new day in America. After an inspiring election, the White House and Congress are pro-equality, and we are closer than ever before to achieving full equality under the law. But we can’t slow down as we cross the finish line; we must take action to realize our dreams and dismantle the systems of oppression. It is time to demand equality. The pro-equality future, which so many of us have worked toward for decades, is closer than ever before. Even with the overwhelming joyous news of the Equality Act on the cusp of becoming law, our nation and community still face the multi-variant human enemy known as Covid-19. As the coronavirus vaccine is slowly making its way to people across the United States, with hopes of it being expedited by the current administration, many people wait anxiously to receive their doses. Others remain skeptical, and among many lingering questions are: How much can we trust the process of approvals for the vaccine? How effective is the vaccine, especially against rising variants? How will the vaccine impact people living with HIV and those managing chronic illnesses? Furthermore, in hopes of contributing to society’s herd immunity, how do we address LGBTQ people as well as Black and Brown folks who, after decades of being treated like an afterthought, may mistrust the medical industry? We all have lost during this plague, some more than others. Now, something even more dire to our nation than the pandemic, lies the enormous division our Nation is suffering. Never before in our lifetimes have we seen our nation literally trying to tear itself apart and rip the very fabric the binds us together through violent acts, threats of civil war, an attack upon our capitol, creation of legislation to oppress, neo-Nazi and white militia groups on the rise and misrepresentation of facts to misinform and mislead our nation. Throughout all this chaos we segregate and look for indifference to further divide us, we have forgotten who and what we are. That is why the official theme for Pride 2021 is “WE ARE HUMAN!” This year the 2021 Columbus Georgia LGBTQ Pride is FOR EVERYONE where we can all come together as one! Instead of trying to find ways we are different, we must work to find ways we are alike. And the first step is realizing above race, sex, age, origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, or financial status that we all have one thing in common and that is WE ARE HUMAN. We know that if we can truly put indifference aside and look for what we have in common, we can begin a new chapter of discussion, problem solving, understanding and compromise which then will lead us to the path of working together instead of tearing ourselves apart. It is a new day in America, and we are at a crossroads whether we can work together, putting aside indifference and thrive as a nation or continue this downward spiral that only spells doom & disaster for all. On June 5th, we will discuss ways we can work together and see each other as one. We must treat each other as equals and show compassion and love for all. For too long we have let indifference consume us which has transformed into bitterness and hatred. We are better than this and We are better when we are united instead of divided.
